THE FUCK?! How can Tyrel hate this movie? What the shit? He says there's too much symbolism, but clearly he's an idiot, because there isn't any!
There's vague allusions to the arian race, in regards to Roy. Short, blonde hair, blue ayes, soldier, can basically do whatever he wants, he's the superman, the Übermensch... And he's a psychotic murderer who's STILL more likable than any other character in the movie.
There is a symbol, but it isn't a metaphor for anything. Deckard's sort of watchdog-like partner keeps making tiny folded paper things wherever he goes. Deckard has a dream of a unicorn. He discovers that they're implanting fake memories into replicants, so they don't automatically run away, trying to experience as much as they can, because they only have a four year life span. After watching Roy die, one of the cops says "It's a shame you won't live. But then again, nobody does." A strange thing to say, considering Deckard's only sustained a couple of broken fingers. He goes back to his appartment and finds the female replicant I can't be bothered to remember the name of. He decides he's going to leave with her, and as they head out, she knocks something over. It's a tiny paper unicorn. Deckard's a replicant, his memories and dreams implanted, sent to hunt down the escaped replicants, and as he goes, he learns what it means to be alive from Roy, causing him to run away as well. This is why he's so fucking emotionless for the whole movie.
There's only one instance of actual symbolism in the movie, and it's damn fucking good. Before dying, Roy captures a pigeon or a dove or something. Some small white bird, okay? When he dies, his grip finally loosens, and the bird flies away. Here's why that symbolism is so good. It doesn't feel like a script writer's gimmick! These days, the character would die and- out of nowhere -we'd get a shot of a dove flying away. In Blade Runner, it's almost like the character wanted that symbol to be there on his death and caught the bird for that reason, like the character wrote the script. And I think that's just awesome.
EVERY SHOT in this movie is fucking beautiful. Why can't we live in such beautiful homes? And why are our cities so much less interesting?
My only complaint is Deckard. I know he's a replicant, and I know the ending is epic because of it, but DAMN IT! He's so unpleasant to watch! He really doesn't behave like a person! And this is the thought I had in my head the whole time, why doesn't he behave like a person?! It was just really difficult to give a shit about Deckard. What should have been a romance scene, was a rape scene. Deckard's a fucking ass hole. Honestly, I wanted to see Roy rip his arms off. And why the hell does she fall in love with him? HE FUCKING RAPED HER! GOD DAMNIT I HATE DECKARD!

Stylistically brilliant though, and I see it's influence in later sci-fi.

'Aliens in the sky, Communists under the bed.'
I don't like fiction. I don't really watch movies, and I don't really read novels. I don't really see much point in it. In fact, I don't see ANY point in it. And I generally feel like I've wasted my time on it.
For the most part, I actually prefer non-fiction. Or, rather, I prefer a non-fiction POINT to a fictional foundation. For example, how effectively Blade Runner makes it's point on consciousness and humanity, and what it says about us.How it says it so differently. And what it says about our negative traits as well. I couldn't care less about the characters as characters. As far as I'm concerned, they're just components in the mechanism of the story. This is why I know naught of actors. They're puppets to the script and director, a means to an end! Irrelevant in the face of what they've made.

we all have a demon inside. mines just a bit meaner
One side likes crazy guns and fas-paced action scenes. This side fuels movies like The Matrix and The Fifth Element. This side is larger than the second group, because it includes the vast majority of the audience that just likes action and violence and techno.
The other kind of sci-fi fan is an actual SCIENCE fiction fan. These are the people who try and figure out how to make a flying car work. These are the people who are more interested in the tactical use of space marine technology, than they are in the sex scene. These are the people who like shows about lawyers dealing with illegal human cloning, VR rape, genetic engineering, and actual aliens. (Aliens meaning, people who are descended from people who moved to colonies on other planets.) They like politics and philosophy, and yes, science. This side of the sci-fi fan base is the minority.
